The Management & Leadership Excellence Series is a growing collection of learning sessions designed to support managers, regardless of leadership level or stage of experience.
Distinct from UBC’s flagship leadership programs, this series offers flexible learning opportunities that managers can access based on their needs, interests, and timing.
The series offers practical tools, shared language, and learning experiences to strengthen their confidence and capability in leading people, teams, and work across the university.

What’s included in the series
Offerings may include deep dives into management topics, such as:
- tactical workplace practices, processes, responsibilities, and tools that support effective day-to-day management
- leadership topics focused on strengthening interpersonal capability, confidence, and skills
Some sessions will be offered on a regular basis throughout the year, such as Management Fundamentals or Challenging Conversations, while others may be introduced as timely or responsive offerings to address emerging priorities, seasonal needs, or specific challenges facing managers at UBC.
As the series evolves, future offerings may explore additional management and operational topics.
The Management Fundamentals pilot session
As part of the Management & Leadership Excellence Series, the Management Fundamentals pilot session is intended for staff managers who are new to their role, or who are looking for a practical foundation in people management at UBC.
This session is intentionally focused on the HR, Workday, and people-management essentials that new managers identified as most helpful in their first few months in their role. It is designed as a practical navigation experience to help managers understand what they need to know, where to go for support, and how to avoid common early missteps.
Through this session, participants will gain:
- A clearer understanding of the transition from individual contributor to manager, and what it means to manage people at UBC
- Familiarity with key HR and Workday processes, systems, and supports
- Awareness of manager responsibilities and available resources related to staff hiring, onboarding, compensation and benefits, performance enablement, HR advisory services, and Workday manager essentials
Please note that this pilot session is focused on people-management, HR, and Workday foundations. It does not currently cover the full spectrum of managing at UBC, such as finances, budgets, IT, procurement, or facilities.
