RSB Plan update: Nurse practitioners can now prescribe certain Extended Health services

Where provincial law allows, Nurse Practitioners can prescribe certain supplies and services.

Under the RSB extended health plan, Sun Life will now reimburse those eligible services or supplies prescribed or ordered by a nurse practitioner the same way as if they were prescribed or ordered by a doctor. This will help you and your covered dependents get access to the care you need, when you need it. An example of a service that nurse
practitioners can prescribe under UBC’s RSB plan is massage therapy. The extended health benefits plan required a doctor’s referral every 12 months for reimbursement of massage therapy claims. Now you can obtain this referral from your doctor or a nurse practitioner. For more information, please contact Sun Life at 1-800-361-6212.

Nurse practitioners (NPs) are registered nurses who have completed Master’s level clinical education which enables them to blend nursing and medical knowledge to:

  • Autonomously diagnose and treat medical conditions,
  • Order and interpret tests,
  • Prescribe medications,
  • Refer to specialists,
  • Act as a most responsible provider for patient care.
