ReMidpoint Progression Increase (MPI): Moving Staff to the Salary Range Midpoint

This memo provides information on ensuring that staff in the following employee groups move to their salary range midpoint within a specified timeframe:
– AAPS,
– Non-Union Technicians & Research Assistants (TRA),
– Executive Administrative (Exec Admin), and
– Farm Workers.

The spreadsheet(s) that you will receive through UBC Workspace (https://files.workspace.ubc.ca/) for your faculty/department lists the AAPS, TRA, Exec Admin, and Farm Worker staff members in your area who are currently below the midpoint, and who are eligible for a midpoint progression increase (MPI). MPI increases are funded by departmental budgets.

Excluded M&P (XMP) staff and Service Unit Directors (SUDs) are not included in this process, as their compensation is governed by a separate process.

Please pay attention to any green coloured cells on the spreadsheets-, as these employees are behind on their midpoint progression increases. Please contact your HR Advisor if you have any concerns pertaining to the performance of these employees.

MPI for AAPS Staff Members

The University will ensure that staff who are members of AAPS progress to the midpoint of their salary range by the end of four years in their position, subject to satisfactory performance. This is in accordance with Letter of Agreement #1 in the Agreement on Conditions and Terms of Employment between UBC and AAPS.

Under this agreement, salary increases must be implemented no later than the employee’s anniversary date. The amount of the increase is at the department’s discretion, provided the staff member reaches the midpoint of the salary range by their fourth year in the role.

Also, please be advised that AAPS employees will not be automatically adjusted to the midpoint of their salary range. Therefore, please forward a completed Staff Appointment Form (SAF) or EPAF to your HR Advisor/Associate for signature for your department’s MPIs. Please inform your staff members of their midpoint progression increase outcomes.

Excluded Management and Professional (XMP) staff and Service Unit Directors (SUDs) are not included, as their compensation is governed by a separate process.

MPI for Non-Union Technicians & Research Assistants (TRAs), Executive Administrative Staff (Exec Admin), and Farm Workers

The University will ensure that staff who are members of these groups progress to the midpoint of their salary range by the end of two years in their position, subject to satisfactory performance. This is in accordance with the Handbook for Technicians & Research Assistants, and The Handbook for Executive Administrative Staff.

Employees who have been in their position for two years or more will be automatically adjusted to the midpoint of their salary range, subject to satisfactory performance. You are not required to complete a SAF/EPAF to adjust their salaries. The increases are effective on the employee’s anniversary date in their current position.

For eligible employee whose term ends prior to the midpoint eligibility date, the increase will not be automated. To ensure appropriate adjustment, you must submit a SAF/EPAF to Payroll to extend the employee’s appointment beyond the eligibility date. The form must be submitted at least one month prior to the employee’s eligibility date to allow sufficient time for Payroll to process the form.

If you have concerns regarding an employee’s performance and do not wish to have their salary adjusted to the midpoint, please contact your HR Advisor as soon as possible before the employee’s anniversary date in order to allow Payroll sufficient time to exclude that employee from automatic adjustment.

For employees who have reached their one year anniversary mark, you have the discretion of providing a midpoint progression increase up to the midpoint salary (i.e., you don’t have to wait for two years). Again, these increases are effective on the employee’s anniversary date in their current position. The one year midpoint progression increase will not be automatically adjusted. To effect a one year midpoint progression increase, please complete and submit a SAF/EPAF to your HR Associate/Advisor in Human Resources with the appropriate authorizations.

Please inform your employees of their midpoint progression increase outcomes.

Please contact your HR Advisor/Associate if you have questions regarding midpoint progression increases, or employee salaries. If you have questions regarding the attached spreadsheet, please contact me at 604-822-9026 or dina.wang@ubc.ca.
