This month, we profile Barbara Meens Thistle, who was appointed to Vice-President, UBC Human Resources in February 2018.
With over 25 years’ experience as a senior leader, Barbara’s expertise encompasses human resources, equity and diversity, procurement, strategy, planning, safety and wellbeing. Learn more about her role as VP of UBC HR, what excites her about her work, and how gardening and disco contribute to her wellbeing.
What do you do in your role as VP, Human Resources?
My role allows me to work with talented professionals around UBC on matters relating to all aspects of Human Resources; Equity, Diversity & Inclusion; Sexual Violence Prevention and Response; and the Integrated Renewal Project (IRP), as well as leadership development, employee housing and UBC strategy.
What is your favourite part of the job and why?
To date, the favourite parts of my job have been learning about the higher education sector, understanding the vast variety of roles and work done here at UBC, and being able to move around our beautiful campuses for meetings and events.
What excites you most about your work at UBC?
I am excited about the level of teaching, learning and research that is offered here at UBC and that will only continue to enhance as we gain more recognition across BC, Canada, North America and globally. To be a part of such a well-respected, trusted and distinguished institution and to work with and support the strong people that work, teach and learn here is very exciting.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I am an avid gardener. I have almost 1,000 flowering plants in my garden and over 100 varieties. It is where you can find me if I am not at work or not reading a book.
What is your favourite genre of music?
I am a big disco fan from way back in the 80s. I remember all the words to the songs and the dance steps. Every time I hear a disco tune, it makes me tap my feet (okay, I may actually break out and dance), sing along, and remember how much fun I had as a young woman going to discotheques with friends.
