Take steps to increase your disability inclusion literacy for Disability Employment Awareness Month and beyond.
October is Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM), a time to recognize the contributions of people with disabilities in the workforce and to promote inclusive employment practices. It is an opportunity for organizations to reflect on how they support accessibility, equity, and belonging. At UBC, we believe in equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace, and we are taking concrete steps to prioritize inclusive recruitment practices. While progress has been made, many individuals still face barriers to employment and advancement.
Centre for Workplace Accessibility
The Centre for Workplace Accessibility (CWA) offers support to improve workplace accessibility using a trauma-informed, person-centered approach. They offer a variety of services including 1:1 consultations, ergonomic and accessibility assessments, demos, courses and training. They provide a curated list of resources for workplace accessibility, as well as physical, digital and virtual accessibility tools and courses. The CWA also administers the workplace accommodation fund, which supports disability-related accommodations for faculty and staff at UBC.
This month, we encourage faculty and staff at all levels to take meaningful action to create workplaces where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. One way to do this is to acquire a knowledge base on disability inclusion literacy and carve out time to have thoughtful conversations about accessibility and inclusion, and educate yourself on this topic.
Disability at Work 101
The CWA would like to invite faculty and staff to complete the Disability at Work 101 course, a 60-minute self-paced virtual webinar available to all UBC faculty and staff.
This course will support you in strengthening your understanding about disability and identifying strategies to promote disability inclusion and accessibility in the workplace.
