Opting out of Student Health Plan

With the rush of back-to-school activities, one item that may be overlooked is if your overage dependent child may opt-out of their post-secondary institution’s Student Health Plan.

Opting-out means that your dependent child is declining coverage under their Student Health plan because they are still covered under their parent’s Extended Health and Dental Care plans.

If Your Dependent Child is a Student at UBC

UBC students are automatically enrolled in the UBC AMS/GSS Student Health Plan (UBC Vancouver) or the UBCSUO Student Health Plan (UBC Okanagan). Dependent children of UBC faculty and staff who are students may opt-out of the Student Health Plan by showing proof of coverage through their parent’s benefits plan.

Please note that students are required to pay the full Student Fee that includes the Student Health Plan fees when tuition fees are normally due. Once the Student Health plan processes their opt-out application, these fees will be reversed on their account.

If Your Dependent Child is a Student at another institution

If your child is a student at another post-secondary institution, they may be automatically enrolled in that institution’s Student Health Plan. Now is the time to have your dependent child inquire whether opting out of their student health plan is possible.

Process for opting-out of Student Health Plan

  1. Visit www.sunlife.ca/member and save a pdf copy of your Sun Life coverage card. If you have not set up your access to the Sun Life Plan Member website, log on to the UBC Faculty and Staff Self-Service website and save a pdf copy of your a) Extended Health, and b) Dental Benefits summary.
  2. To opt-out of the Student Health Association plan, visit www.ihaveaplan.ca and, when prompted for proof of coverage, upload the document to the website.

If your child is opting-out of a Student Health plan that is not part of www.ihaveaplan.ca, please follow up with that institution for their opt-out process.

If you have questions or need help with opting-out process, please email benefitsinfo@hr.ubc.ca
