Resources and support for coping with difficult events

The past few weeks have been challenging and difficult to process for many. It is normal to have a range of emotions like sadness, anger and fear in response to shocking and distressing events.

The war on Ukraine has also impacted many students, faculty and staff. And on the UBC Okanagan campus, we are mourning the loss of a member of the security team. That is why we wanted to highlight some of our important tools and resources for faculty and staff to help you manage through this difficult time.

Immediate support

The UBC Employee and Family Assistance Program LifeWorks Care Access Centre is available 24/7 by calling 1-866-424-0770.  If you are experiencing an emergency or crisis and require immediate counselling services, select the emergency option to speak to a crisis counsellor.

If you have been affected by the crisis in Ukraine, LifeWorks has set up a dedicated 24/7 crisis support line. Call 1-844-751-2133 to receive free crisis counselling support and/or referral to community resources.

Other resources

There are also some helpful articles available on the UBC HR website and LifeWorks, that might help navigate these challenging times:

If you are feeling stress and sorrow at this time, you are not alone. Be kind to yourself and others. Check-in with colleagues. Make time for rest, spiritual connection and gather with loved ones. If you see someone struggling, encourage them to seek support. Reach out and seek support for yourself if needed.
