New EDI language in UBC job descriptions

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) language is being added to UBC job descriptions

As part of the Inclusion Action Plan, new EDI language is being added to UBC staff job descriptions (JDs) this fall. This includes an EDI statement that will appear at the top of staff JDs, as well as two EDI statement bullets that will fall under the ‘Minimum Qualifications’ section.

At UBC, we believe that attracting and sustaining a diverse workforce is key to the successful pursuit of excellence in research, innovation, and learning for all faculty, staff and students. Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.

EDI statement bullets at the bottom of Minimum Qualifications section

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Project timeline

  • January 2023 | The EDI statements were added to the in-scope JD templates in Workday, and form part of new JDs created in Workday.
  • Fall 2023 | Work is currently underway to update existing JDs in Workday (25,000+) with a target completion of end of Fall.

Hiring managers should be aware of these new EDI statements. Note that these changes currently don't apply to faculty positions, but hiring managers can choose to add them to faculty JDs. Faculty and student positions will be considered in a future phase of the project.

Other types of positions that are out of scope include contingent worker and paymaster JDs, as well as incomplete JDs. If a JD is in a non-standard format, an equivalent statement is being added to the end of the JD.
