Help support the 2024 Faculty & Staff Sports Day

Adam Charania, interim VPHR

From Adam Charania, Interim Vice-President Human Resources.

Faculty & Staff Sports Day is almost here, and with registration closing next week, I want to encourage you to help promote this event within your units and teams. The event takes place on the afternoon of Friday, May 3 at UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan campuses, with teams of 4-6 competing across a range of physical and intellectual challenges for about 2 hours.

We know that not every unit can find the time to allow faculty and staff to participate due to operational needs. As people leaders, please support and encourage our faculty and staff to participate in this unique event where possible. Sports Day is a great opportunity for faculty and staff to be part of a vibrant campus culture – one that focuses on our wellbeing and builds social connections.

We had a successful event last year with a record turnout:

  • UBC Vancouver had 567 participants in 117 teams
  • UBC Okanagan had over 300 participants in 51 teams

We hope to increase participation numbers this year.

This event is a great way to get moving, build camaraderie, and have a lot of fun in the process. Plus, there is a healthy dose of competition as teams and individuals vie to earn the top awards and prizes.

Some points to note

  • The event is FREE, thanks to a partnership between VPHR and UBC Recreation on both campuses.
  • Activities are suitable for varying levels of experience, fitness and ability. This event has been developed to reduce barriers, promote fun, and social connection for all faculty and staff.
  • Individuals and teams can participate for the full 1.5 hours and enjoy the beer garden and snacks after the event. There are no restrictions on how long people can take part in Sports Day. If a team can only make it for 30 minutes, that is fine.
  • All individuals with a current UBC employee ID number are eligible!

Faculty & Staff Sports Day is one of many campaigns and initiatives that help UBC cultivate a workplace culture that encourages individuals and teams to flourish. We appreciate your support in promoting and encouraging participation in Faculty & Staff Sports Day with your networks.

Registrations close on April 24 for UBCV and April 29 for UBCO: UBC Vancouver | UBC Okanagan.

I hope to see you there!
