Are you enrolled in the right benefit plans?

Your benefit plans are a valuable part of your compensation at UBC, that is why we encourage all faculty and staff to take a look at the benefits you’re enrolled in, to make sure you have all the coverage you are eligible for.

We tend to think about our benefit plans when there is an immediate need, or when we enrol (oh, and when they get Benefits FYI, of course). But, as the people in your life change, as the place you live changes, as your finances change – each of these can impact your benefits. Even a few months later after your first day, your needs may change and your details could be out of date (for those in the 25/35/40/50 Year Clubs, your situation might be even more pressing).

Let’s take a closer look at your benefits.

Are your key details up to date?

Before we look closer at your benefits, we want to encourage everyone to check their contact details, particularly if your home address is up to date, as these details are used to help administer your benefit plans.

To review and edit your address details see Change My Home Contact Information in the Workday knowledge base.

Review your benefit plans

A recent update to Workday has brought about a new streamlined view for all the benefits you are currently enrolled in. We can’t share the images here, but you can review View My Benefits in the Workday Knowledge Base to see how to navigate to your Benefits Summary.

In short, after you sign in to Workday

  • In the top right corner of your Workday home page, click your profile icon and select View Profile.
  • From the menu on the left side of your screen, click Benefits. You will now see the new card view for all your benefits.

Three details to check in your summary

Here are a few suggestions for anyone looking at their benefit summary in Workday:

Make sure you enrolled in all the right benefit plans

  • Take a look at all the cards under the three sections: Health care, Insurance & retirement, and other benefits. Are these all the plans you intended to enrol in?
  • It is worth checking, as you won’t be enrolled in some plans automatically. For example, the Extended Health Plan and the Dental plan are free for employees, but you aren’t enrolled automatically when you start your role.

Check your insurance coverage

  • In the new card view, you can quickly review the coverage amount for that insurance policy. It might be a good time to review if this is the right level of coverage and change it accordingly

Check your beneficiaries and dependents are up to date

  • Regularly reviewing your beneficiaries and dependents will ensure that the correct individual(s) or organization will be paid when the time comes.
  • If you want to see a summary of all your benefits and who the dependents and beneficiaries are click the “View as Grid” at the top of page
  • Alternatively, you can select “View beneficiaries” or “View dependents” at the top of the page

Thanks for checking your benefits! We do our utmost to ensure the benefits plans are working hard for you; if you keep your details up to date, you’ll be able to get the most from your benefits plan.
