Using your Emergency Travel Assistance plan when you travel this summer

Before you travel this summer, we recommend you take a look at the checklist below, so you have everything you need to make a claim if there is a medical emergency.

Travel Checklist

  1. Download your Travel Card: Visit the website mysunlife.ca, go to “Coverage Information” and then select “Print my coverage card” located under “Resources”. For those using the My Sun Life mobile app, on the home screen, go to “Coverage card” and select the Travel Card. You can take a screenshot or add it to your phone’s wallet. Despite the upcoming changes, the number on the Travel Card will reach the Emergency Travel assistance provider before and after July 1, 2023.
  2. Review your coverage as described in your policy. There are some limitations and exclusions to your coverage.
  3. Check the Canadian government’s travel website: www.travel.gc.ca
  4. Keep your proof of travel: This includes receipts for your flight, car rental, hotel accommodation, etc. You will need this documentation to make a claim.

If you have a medical emergency while travelling

You, someone with you, or hospital staff will need to call the provider before you receive medical care. During the call, your coverage and benefits will be confirmed, and you’ll be referred to a medical facility or physician. You’ll be asked to provide your hospital, hotel or other telephone number, so the provider can stay in contact with you.

Any invasive and investigative medical procedures (e.g., surgery, angiogram, MRI) must be pre-authorized by the provider, except in extreme circumstances. If you don’t contact the provider, your claim could be reduced or declined. When you call the emergency travel assistance number, provide your policy information, and describe the situation.
