For people who struggle with substance use and addictions, it can sometimes be difficult to seek out help and support.
If you are looking for help, or you want to support someone you know in finding assistance, the following resources are available.
Counselling services
Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) and ALAViDA substance use support
The Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) is a confidential and voluntary counselling support service. Counsellors can help with a range of issues, including relationship challenges, stress, depression, anxiety, addiction, family issues, grief and more. Services are confidential and available in multiple languages and formats.
Our new EFAP provider, GreenShield Health has also integrated the ALAViDA Substance Use Support program. ALAViDA offers confidential, evidence-based substance use support from the privacy of your smartphone. Through GreenShield+, you can access a secure platform where you can track your journey, access self-guided resources available 24/7, and text or meet your care team.
Whether you’re looking to be proactive about your health, or face challenges with substance use, you can access ALAViDA directly from your smartphone. No awkward conversations, no shame, and 100% confidential. Call 1-866-424-0770 or login to GreenShield+.
Psychological services through UBC's Extended Health Plan
The UBC Extended Health Plan also provides reimbursement of counselling services provided by a Registered Psychologist, Social Worker or Clinical Counsellor of your choice. You (and your eligible dependents) may be reimbursed for 100% of reasonable and customary charges, up to a maximum of $3,000 per person, per year. No doctor’s referral is required to access this service.
UBC Okanagan: Harm Reduction Team (HaRT)
HaRT is an initiative of UBCO’s Campus Wellness and Education Unit, providing resources to UBCO campus and community members. HaRT is a collective of students, health and social workers, researchers, and harm reduction experts – this group includes people who use drugs.
They work with communities to create, deliver, research, and promote harm reduction interventions (e.g., toxic drug response training, naloxone training, drug-checking, smoking/vaping cessation). Services include drug-checking services, information about lower-risk drug use, and referrals to other services to help campus and community members at UBC Okanagan to make informed choices.
