Faculty Association members with tenure or grant tenure can request a reduced appointment. Appointments can be reduced to 50 – 99% short term or indefinitely. In order to process a reduced appointment a faculty member must complete a Reduced Appointment Form (doc), which will need to be reviewed and approved by both the head and dean. Once completed this form should be submitted to UBC's faculty relations or human resources departments.
Such appointments continue to be eligible for pension and benefits, but some contributions may be based on the actual salary paid. Please see the Agreement on Leaves of Absence for more information.
A joint appointment exists where a faculty member holds an academic appointment in more than one academic unit. Joint appointments bring many advantages, including interdisciplinary scholarship and collegiality, but they also present challenges, especially for individual faculty members who must respond to the demands of more than one head of academic unit.
To help provide clarity in expectations and obligations of all parties, please use the Joint appointment checklist (doc). This checklist should be used to confirm that all aspects of a joint appointment are discussed at the time the appointment is made. A written agreement should be in place confirming these points, signed by the relevant heads of academic units and the faculty member.
