Adjunct, clinical, and honorary

Appointment at the adjunct rank does not imply that the appointee has the qualifications necessary for appointment to one of the regular academic ranks. Salary may be paid to an Adjunct Professor for periods not to exceed one year at a time. For more information, please review Policy AP4 - Faculty Term Appointments.

Such appointments are not eligible for pension and benefits except for statutory benefits (Canada Pension Plan, Employment Insurance and Worker’s Compensation Board).

These appointees are not members of the Faculty Association.

If the appointee is a not a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, please review the requirements for recruiting foreign academics.

These positions are often non-salaried. However, if a salary is paid, such appointments are eligible for pension and benefits if the salary meets the minimum required for benefits’ eligibility. Otherwise, statutory benefits apply (Canada Pension Plan, Employment Insurance and WorkSafeBC).

Such appointments are non-salaried and may be up to 10 years in length.

A lump sum honorarium could be paid as a recognition of services rendered. If an honorarium is paid to an Honorary appointment, that honorarium is not eligible for pension and benefits except for statutory benefits (Canada Pension Plan, Employment Insurance and Worker’s Compensation Board).

On the recommendation of the Dean, an individual holding a faculty appointment at another academic institution may be appointed as an honorary affiliate faculty member of UBC.
