Voluntary Retirement Program

The Voluntary Retirement Program (VRP) offers eligible UBC faculty and staff the option of voluntary retirement in exchange for a financial incentive.

The VRP is a new, temporary and one-time offering for eligible UBC faculty and staff to opt into voluntary retirement. If an eligible employee applies for the VRP, they are electing to officially retire from UBC.

This program was developed as another resource to support leaders as they consider their future academic and operational services, as they look to optimize service delivery, to workforce plan, and for long-term financial sustainability in recognition of the current environment we are in.  This is similar to other universities across B.C. and the country.

The VRP is designed to support those contemplating retirement while respecting the contributions made to our organization over the years and aligns with UBC’s commitment to support the career stages of all our employees while managing our organizational structure effectively.

The program will be rolled out university-wide for eligible faculty, and faculty members can apply at any time during the application date range. For eligible staff, the VRP will be available depending on whether your Faculty or VP unit has opted in, at the discretion of your Dean or Vice President. For staff, there may be a cap or limit, as determined by participating Faculties or VP units.

Application dates

The program will accept applications between May 20, 2025 July 18, 2025.

Important: Once your application for the VRP has been acknowledged (for faculty) or approved (for staff) by your Dean or Administrative Vice President, as well as by UBCV Central Human Resources or UBCO Human Resources, and you have received an email confirmation from either UBCV Central HR or UBCO HR indicating that your application meets all program requirements, your decision to retire is final. This decision cannot be changed or reversed and constitutes an irrevocable decision to retire. The VRP is not intended to be combined with other retirement options under the Collective Agreements and terms & conditions of employment.
