The benefits you are eligible for as a member of the BCGEU Vancouver (Child Care) employee group depend on:
- if you work full time, part time or hourly,
- the length of your appointment,
- the number of hours you work per week, and
- your age at your date of hire
Before you enrol in your benefit package, please review the table below to familiarize yourself with:
- the benefits you are eligible for,
- whether these benefits are mandatory or optional,
- the date that each benefit will become effective, and
- the monthly cost of each benefit.
You will receive a benefits task in your Workday inbox to enrol. Once you receive this task, please ensure that that you enrol in the benefit plans in Workday. For Workday resources and help visit the Integrated Service Centre.

You do not need to enrol in the above benefits. You apply for them when you want to use them.
Full-time and part-time (at least 20 hours per week) appointments
If you have a full-time or part-time, monthly or hourly paid appointment for 12 months or more, you are eligible for all of the benefits outlined in the table below.
If you have a full-time or part-time monthly or hourly paid appointment for more than 3 months but less than 12 months, you are eligible for the first three benefits listed in the table:
If your full-time or part-time appointment is extended to a total of 12 months or more, you will:
- automatically be enrolled in the Disability Benefit Plan,
- automatically be enrolled in Basic Life Insurance, and
- be eligible for Optional Life Insurance and AD&D at this time; however, you must submit a Health Statement with your application, which is subject to approval by the insurer.
If you have a full-time appointment that is 3 months or less or a part time appointment and you work less than 20 hours per week (regardless of the length of your appointment), you are not eligible for benefits. You will still need to login to Workday to sign up for payroll.

Hourly paid appointments of less than 20 guaranteed hours per week
If you have an hourly paid appointment of 12 months or more but you were not guaranteed at least 20 hours a week when you were first hired, you are not initially eligible for benefits. After 3 months of working at least 20 hours per week, UBC Financial Operations – Payroll will review your hours to see if you are eligible for the benefits listed in the table below and, if eligible, send you the benefits enrolment task in Workday.
If you have an hourly paid appointment of more than 3 months, but less than 12 months but you were not guaranteed at least 20 hours a week when you were first hired, you are not initially eligible for benefits. After 3 months of work of at least 20 hours per week, UBC Financial Operations – Payroll will review your hours to see if you are eligible and send you the benefits enrolment task in Workday for the following benefits:
If your hourly appointment is extended to a total of 12 months or more and you work at least 20 hours per week, you will:
- automatically be enrolled in the Disability Benefit Plan;
- automatically be enrolled in Basic Life Insurance; and
